The reason John Proctor shouted God is dead, is because he was so upset and baffled by how everyone believed in witches. He said this also because he knew God was absolutely gone from this town and all the good people are being accused guilty and all the bad people are being trusted. John couldn't believe that these Judges and reverends were believing these young foolish girls over him and common sense.
